Atunyota Akpobome, widely recognized as Ali Baba, has recently shared his thoughts on the often controversial subject of polygamy.
During a conversation with media host Nedu, the veteran comedian emphasized that polygamy, if approached with maturity and responsibility, can actually contribute to family unity and reduce conflicts rather than incite them.
Ali Baba pointed out that some men resort to infidelity due to the limitations imposed by monogamous relationships, suggesting that polygamy offers a more organized and transparent alternative. He remarked:
“When a man has only one wife, controlling the relationship can be challenging. But if the wife is aware that there are others, she tends to be more understanding because she knows there are alternatives if she steps out of line.”
He further argued that responsible polygamy discourages extramarital affairs and eases tensions between spouses when managed with care.
Reflecting on cultural traditions, Ali Baba highlighted that polygamy was not only accepted but often supported by women in many societies.
He shared an anecdote from Ibadan, where a woman encouraged her husband to marry another woman instead of engaging in secret affairs. He explained:
“I know of a woman in Ibadan who actually urged her husband to take another wife. Back then, it was common for women to even present a young girl to their husbands to prevent them from having mistresses.”
The comedian also noted that in many African cultures, polygamy served practical purposes beyond personal gratification or social status. For instance, widows with young children were often married to their deceased husband’s brother to ensure continued support and care for the family.
He added:
“People often overlook that many men today father children outside marriage. The traditional system simply formalized these relationships, making them more accountable and structured.”
