A medical panel led by the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on Thursday concluded that the health condition of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is not life-threatening.
The report, submitted to the Federal High Court in Abuja on October 13 by the prosecution team headed by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), followed an earlier directive by Justice James Omotosho for an independent medical assessment. The order was made after conflicting reports were presented by medical experts engaged by both the prosecution and the defence.
According to excerpts from the panel’s findings, read in open court during Thursday’s proceedings, Kanu’s health condition does not pose any immediate danger to his life. The report also confirmed that he is medically fit to stand trial.

Relying on the panel’s conclusions and noting the absence of any objections from both legal teams, Justice Omotosho ruled that the defendant is fit to proceed with his defence. The court consequently granted Kanu six consecutive days, beginning October 23, to open and close his case.
Additionally, the judge approved an oral application by Kanu’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), requesting a private consultation session between the defendant and his legal team outside the premises of the Department of State Services (DSS). Agabi had raised concerns that their discussions within DSS custody might be monitored or recorded.
Justice Omotosho directed that the private meeting be held in the courtroom on October 22, between 9 a.m. and 12 noon, with only Kanu and his lawyers present. The court further scheduled the continuation of Kanu’s trial to commence the following day, October 23.
