Vice President Kashim Shettima has intervened in the ongoing conflict between Dangote Refinery and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), urging all parties to exercise patience, demonstrate patriotism, and engage in constructive dialogue to resolve the dispute.
He emphasized that neither the nation nor any organization should undermine the efforts of a key player like Dangote Refinery over a disagreement with a labor union that can be amicably settled through communication.
Addressing attendees at the inauguration of the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit (NES #31) in Abuja on Monday, Shettima highlighted Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest individual, as more than just a person-he represents a vital institution. He called on Nigerians to safeguard and nurture the refinery, recognizing it as a critical asset for the country’s economy.
“Aliko Dangote transcends being a mere individual; he embodies an institution. It is imperative that we unite to protect Nigeria’s economic strength,” the Vice President remarked. “Had he invested $10 billion in global tech giants like Apple, Tesla, or Facebook, his net worth might have soared to $78 billion. Instead, he chose to invest in Nigeria, and this investment must be regarded as a legacy for future generations.”
Shettima appealed to both the refinery’s management and the labor union to handle the dispute with prudence, reflection, and a strong sense of national loyalty, underscoring that industrial conflicts should never hinder the country’s economic advancement.
“We have a collective responsibility to diligently protect, promote, and sustain this refinery,” he asserted. “Collaboration between labor and the private sector is essential to fortify relationships that support ongoing economic development. Threatening the existence of an institution that serves the nation’s interests is not a solution.”
The Vice President reiterated the Federal Government’s dedication to creating a business climate that fosters industrial peace, boosts investor confidence, and encourages inclusive economic growth. He revealed that the administration is actively streamlining bureaucratic processes to better influence market dynamics, attract private investment, and enhance national productivity.
Highlighting the importance of unity and shared accountability, Shettima described Nigeria as “a great nation seeking answers to its challenges,” urging all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and cooperation over conflict.
