Victor Boniface of the Super Eagles and Werder Bremen has joined the ranks of elite footballers like Phil Foden and Vinícius Jr. whose market values have significantly declined in 2025, according to Soccernet.ng.
While on-field performance remains the primary driver of a player’s market valuation, other elements such as age, contract duration, potential, economic conditions, and injury history also play crucial roles in influencing these fluctuations.
With 2025 nearing its end, Soccernet.ng reviews the footballers who have experienced the steepest drops in market worth this year, based on data from Transfermarkt.
1. Phil Foden
Manchester City’s dynamic attacking midfielder, who earned the Premier League Player of the Season award for 2023/2024 after netting 19 goals and assisting eight times, helped Pep Guardiola’s squad clinch their fourth straight English top-tier title.

However, Foden struggled to maintain his previous season’s brilliance, scoring only seven goals as Manchester City slipped to third place behind Arsenal and Liverpool.
This downturn caused his market value to plummet from €140 million in 2024 to €80 million in 2025, marking a €60 million decrease.
2. Vinícius Jr.
The Real Madrid winger, who was a Ballon d’Or nominee after playing a pivotal role in Madrid’s 2024 UEFA Champions League triumph at Wembley, saw his value decline despite the accolade going to Manchester City’s Rodri.
Whether due to the disappointment of missing out on the award or the spotlight shifting with Kylian Mbappé’s arrival at Madrid, Vinícius Jr.’s performances dipped slightly this year.

Consequently, his market value dropped from €200 million in 2024 to €150 million this year, a €50 million reduction.
3. Gavi
After winning the 2022 Kopa Trophy, the young Spaniard endured a lengthy absence of 316 days due to a cruciate ligament injury and has yet to regain his top form.
His market value has consequently fallen by €40 million, now standing at €40 million compared to last year.
Currently sidelined, Gavi recently underwent arthroscopic surgery to address a meniscus problem in his right knee.

4. Rodri
The 2024 Ballon d’Or recipient missed 53 matches due to a cruciate ligament injury, which significantly impacted his playing time and market value, dropping from €130 million to €90 million.
5. Eduardo Camavinga
At 22, Camavinga’s minutes on the pitch at Real Madrid have diminished over the past year, compounded by two hamstring injuries and an ankle issue.
These setbacks contributed to his market value falling from €80 million in 2024 to €50 million currently.

6. Martin Ødegaard
Arsenal’s captain experienced a market value decline from €110 million to €80 million following a less impactful 2024 season.
A 33% drop in goal contributions and an ankle sprain that sidelined him for nearly three months under Mikel Arteta’s management were key factors behind this decrease.

7. Bernardo Silva
The Portuguese midfielder’s market value has decreased by €28 million compared to last year. Despite contributing to over 20 goals during Manchester City’s title-winning campaign, his involvement dropped to just nine goal contributions in the subsequent season, leaving his current worth at €32 million.
8. Victor Boniface
Injuries hampered Boniface’s progress at Bayer Leverkusen, resulting in him losing his starting position to Patrick Schick.
After an impressive debut season with 21 goals and nine assists in 2024, the Super Eagles striker managed only 11 goals the following year.
Concerns over his fitness led to the cancellation of a potential transfer to AC Milan, before he secured a season-long loan move to Werder Bremen on a free transfer.
His market value has consequently dropped from €45 million last year to €20 million now.

9. Dušan Vlahović
The Serbian striker’s market value has fallen by €25 million, now valued at €35 million after a domestic season marked by his lowest goal tally since 2021.

10. James Maddison
After transferring from Leicester City to Tottenham Hotspur for €46.3 million in 2024, Maddison’s market value has dropped to €35 million following a cruciate ligament injury sustained a few months ago.
