On Sunday, the Edo State Police Command announced the successful prevention of a kidnapping attempt targeting traders along the Igarra-Ibillo highway in the Akoko Edo local government area.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, a coordinated response by police operatives compelled the kidnappers to abandon their captives and retreat into the surrounding forest.
The incident occurred on Friday as traders were returning from Ibillo Market, Yamu explained.
He detailed, “At approximately 8:30 PM on October 17, 2025, the Command received an urgent alert regarding suspected kidnappers active on the Igarra-Ibillo route.”
“The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Igarra promptly deployed officers, including members of the command’s tactical rescue unit, to the location.”
“Upon noticing the approaching security personnel, the criminals opened fire but were quickly subdued and forced to flee into the bush, leaving behind the traders they intended to abduct.”
“All individuals targeted were safely recovered, and ongoing search operations are underway to capture the suspects who escaped.”
Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika praised the courage and professionalism demonstrated by the officers, as well as the vital support from local vigilante groups and hunters.
He urged community members to stay alert and continue assisting the police by reporting any suspicious activities and sharing useful information promptly.
“Maintaining security is a collective effort. United, we can eliminate criminal threats from our neighborhoods,” the CP emphasized.
