Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has gifted brand-new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to all former deputy governors of the state as a token of appreciation for their service.

In addition to the vehicle presentation, the governor announced an increase in the salaries of traditional rulers alongside improved healthcare provisions. He encouraged these leaders to foster peace and maintain harmonious relationships with their communities.

During the handover ceremony at Government House, Uyo, Governor Eno handed over the keys to the new Land Cruisers, emphasizing that the gesture was in recognition of the former deputies’ dedication and sacrifices toward the state’s progress.

He highlighted that their unwavering commitment over the years warranted enhanced comfort and called on them to support his administration’s ARISE Agenda by promoting peace and creating a conducive environment for development.

Obong Ekere, upon receiving his vehicle, expressed gratitude for the governor’s generosity and pledged his ongoing support.

In a related event marking the 38th anniversary of Akwa Ibom’s creation, Governor Eno swore in Akuku Saviour Sylvester Udofia, the paramount ruler of Abak local government area, as the new chairman of the State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers (SCTR). He appealed to the royal fathers for their continued cooperation.

The governor reaffirmed his dedication to the welfare of traditional leaders, announcing that their monthly stipends would be increased starting October 1. Furthermore, he approved the appointment of personal assistants (PAs) for each paramount ruler to enhance their administrative support.

Governor Eno expressed his steadfast commitment to the wellbeing of all Akwa Ibom citizens across various sectors, praying for their health and longevity so the state can continue to benefit from their wisdom and experience.

Among the former deputy governors present were Ambassador Etim Okpoyo, Noble Lady Valerie Ebe, Mr. Moses Ekpo, and Obong Nsima Ekere.

Nevertheless, some opposition voices have criticized the governor’s decision to assign government aides to traditional rulers, viewing it as a strategic move to politicize and divide the traditional institution within the state.

Comrade Nkaiso Abia, a member of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Eket Senatorial District, argued that this approach aims to infiltrate the traditional system politically, using incentives to secure loyalty and smooth the path for Governor Eno’s 2027 re-election campaign.
