The Enugu State Government has strongly denounced the heinous murder of Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya from the Nsukka Catholic Diocese, who was fatally shot by unknown assailants on Friday along the Alumona-Eha Ndiagu road within Nsukka Local Government Area.

This tragic event has deeply unsettled the Catholic community and the wider public, with the state authorities labeling the act as both “cowardly” and “merciless.”

In an official release on Saturday, Dr. Malachy Agbo, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, conveyed the government’s profound sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.

“The Enugu State Government vehemently condemns this atrocious crime and extends sympathies to the late priest’s family, the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, and all faithful members of the Church affected by this grievous loss,” Agbo stated.

Honoring the late priest as a beacon of harmony and dedication, the government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the lives and properties of its citizens.

“Ensuring the safety of our people and their belongings remains a top priority for this administration, and we pledge to bring those responsible to justice,” the Commissioner affirmed.

“We are prepared to deploy all available resources, including advanced technology and reliable intelligence networks, to apprehend the culprits and eradicate the lingering threats of violence within the state,” he added.

To accelerate the investigation, the state has announced a reward of ₦10 million for anyone who provides verifiable information that leads to the capture of the offenders.

“Individuals with credible leads are urged to contact 07077451426 without delay,” the Commissioner appealed.

The government also called on residents to stay composed yet alert, emphasizing that effective cooperation between the public and security forces is vital to eliminating criminal activities.

The murder of Fr. Eya has ignited widespread grief and condemnation throughout Enugu State and the Catholic community, with many describing the attack as an assault on the principles of peace and faith that he embodied.

Meanwhile, security operatives have reportedly stepped up patrols and monitoring in Nsukka and neighboring areas, with active investigations underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The administration reiterated its unwavering determination to combat crime, warning that those behind the priest’s killing “will find no refuge anywhere in Enugu State.”
