The Joint National Assembly (NASS) Committee on Works, encompassing members from both the Senate and the House of Representatives, has lauded the remarkable progress achieved in Enugu State under the stewardship of Governor Peter Mbah. The committee highlighted that the governor enjoys a strong approval rating both within the state and across the nation.
During a recent oversight visit to federal road projects in Enugu, Governor Mbah appealed for increased budgetary allocation for the state in the 2026 fiscal plan, emphasizing the need for accelerated completion of ongoing road infrastructure initiatives.
Leading the delegation, Honourable Akin Alabi, Chairman of the House Committee on Works, expressed the committee’s admiration during their meeting with Governor Mbah at the Government House in Enugu over the weekend. He shared insights from their interactions with contractors involved in the projects, noting their unsolicited praise for the governor’s supportive role.
“Throughout our inspection, contractors repeatedly acknowledged the governor’s cooperation without any prompting,” Alabi remarked. “They feel secure and welcomed, appreciating the approval of their right of way. It’s clear that a governor who intends to hinder federal projects could easily do so, but Governor Mbah has chosen to facilitate smooth progress.”
He added, “Wherever this committee visits, we will continue to commend your efforts publicly-in the House of Representatives, the Senate, and beyond. Our brief survey at local accommodations and other venues confirmed your high approval rating. Your leadership is not just successful; it’s genuinely impactful. I trust you will maintain your dedication to the welfare of Enugu’s citizens.”
Alabi further noted the state’s upward trajectory under Mbah’s two-year tenure, urging continued focus on progressive development. The committee also pledged to hold federal contractors accountable to ensure they deliver quality work and value for public funds.
Governor Mbah, in his response, underscored the strategic importance of Enugu State in Nigeria’s historical and economic landscape, advocating for prioritized attention in federal infrastructure planning. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing road networks, which are vital to transforming Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to an ambitious $30 billion within six years.
“Road infrastructure is the backbone of economic expansion,” Mbah stated. “It connects communities, markets, and industries, enabling citizens to enjoy a dignified standard of living. Our government takes this responsibility seriously and is investing heavily in local road development.”
He acknowledged the federal government’s contributions to road projects in Enugu but urged for increased momentum, particularly on the Makurdi-Enugu Expressway and the Onitsha-Enugu Express Road, which have experienced delays.
“While we appreciate the federal efforts, the pace of work on some key routes remains slow. We are ready to assist in resolving any issues related to land access or compensation to prevent further delays,” Mbah affirmed.
Present at the meeting were Senator Osita Ngwu, the Senate Minority Whip, and Honorable Dennis Agbo, representing the Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency, who also contributed to the discussions.
