The Nigerian Army’s 9 Brigade in Ikeja recently detained a 36-year-old man, Animashaun Khalid, for falsely presenting himself as a high-ranking military officer. Following his arrest, he was promptly transferred to the Lagos State Police Command for further action.
Khalid was caught at the bustling Arena Market in Oshodi, Lagos, where he was found in possession of a counterfeit Nigerian Army identification card. The forged ID displayed his name alongside the rank of ‘Major,’ a title he is not entitled to.
Inter-Agency Collaboration Leads to Arrest
In a statement released on Monday, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, highlighted the arrest as a testament to the effective cooperation between military and police forces. “Soldiers apprehended the suspect at Arena Market with a fake Nigerian Army ID card bearing the rank of Major. He was immediately handed over to the Lagos State Police Command, demonstrating seamless inter-agency teamwork,” Hundeyin explained.
Ongoing Investigation to Uncover Further Details
The case has been assigned to Special Squad I within the Lagos State Police Command for an in-depth investigation. Authorities are focused on uncovering the origin of the forged documents, identifying any collaborators, and determining if Khalid used the fraudulent identity to perpetrate additional crimes. “Once the investigation concludes, appropriate legal proceedings will follow,” CSP Hundeyin added.
Security Chiefs Praise Swift Action and Call for Public Vigilance
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, commended the military’s prompt response, emphasizing the critical role of inter-agency synergy in combating crime. “The rapid arrest and handover highlight the effectiveness of coordinated efforts among security agencies,” he remarked.
CP Jimoh also appealed to Lagos residents to stay alert and report any suspicious behavior. “We urge the public to remain watchful and cooperate with security forces. Our continued partnership is vital to maintaining safety and security across Lagos State,” he concluded.
Context and Importance of Identity Verification
Impersonation of military personnel is a serious offense that undermines public trust and security. According to recent data from the Nigerian Security Tracker, cases involving fake military credentials have seen a slight increase in urban centers, making vigilance and prompt law enforcement response crucial. Similar incidents in other regions have led to significant criminal investigations, underscoring the need for robust identity verification measures.
By swiftly addressing such fraudulent activities, Nigerian security agencies reinforce their commitment to safeguarding citizens and maintaining the integrity of the armed forces.
