In a coordinated effort, the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), alongside security agencies, has successfully dismantled a ring of counterfeit traffic officers who have been exploiting motorists by posing as legitimate OYRTMA personnel.
During a press briefing held in Ibadan on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Maj. Adesagba Adekoya (rtd), the Executive Chairman of OYRTMA, disclosed that the agency has been overwhelmed with reports from residents and drivers about these fraudulent actors operating under the pretense of traffic enforcement.
“We have been receiving a steady stream of complaints regarding individuals masquerading as OYRTMA officials to intimidate and extort money from unsuspecting road users. A notable case occurred on the 9th of last month when a banker was robbed of ₦85,000 by such impostors. This incident is just one example among many,” he stated.
Maj. Adekoya explained that in response, OYRTMA collaborated with the Amotekun Corps and Operation Burst to conduct a targeted crackdown in Egbeda and Lagelu Local Government Areas, aimed at eradicating this criminal network.
“Our operation led to the recovery of approximately 95 vehicle number plates that had been unlawfully confiscated, numerous car batteries ranging from 75 to 150 amps, and counterfeit tickets demanding extortionate sums of up to ₦90,000. We also apprehended eight suspects in Egbeda, who have been transferred to the police at Testing Ground for further legal proceedings,” he revealed.
The chairman emphasized that traffic regulation authority in Oyo State is exclusively vested in OYRTMA, clarifying the misconception about local government roles.
“While local governments may enforce parking regulations, they lack the jurisdiction to detain vehicles for traffic offenses. This exclusive mandate belongs solely to OYRTMA. Unfortunately, these criminals exploit this ambiguity to prey on innocent citizens,” he explained.
Maj. Adekoya further highlighted the lawful procedures OYRTMA follows when dealing with traffic offenders, contrasting it with the illegal tactics of the impostors.
“Our agency ensures that any traffic violation is addressed through a formal tribunal process, guaranteeing due process and fairness. In contrast, these fake officers demand immediate payments without any legal basis. We are committed to eradicating such malpractice with the support of security forces,” he affirmed.
Motorists were urged to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be a traffic official before complying.
“All genuine OYRTMA personnel carry official identification cards and wear standardized uniforms. We have also established dedicated complaint channels for reporting suspicious behavior. Motorists should remain vigilant and contact us directly if they suspect fraud,” he advised.
Reiterating OYRTMA’s dedication to maintaining an equitable and lawful traffic management system, Maj. Adekoya assured the public of ongoing efforts to eliminate unlawful harassment and extortion on Oyo State roads.
