Flour Mills Supports Federal Govt’s Silo Revitalisation, Food Self-sufficiency Plan

Flour Mills Champions Federal Government’s Silo Revitalisation and Drives Food Self-Sufficiency Initiative

Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN) stands out as the sole private enterprise to fully satisfy all requirements and deliver exceptional performance within the federal government’s silo concession revitalization initiative. This program, championed by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, is a pivotal effort designed to reduce food loss and bolster Nigeria’s food self-reliance. It builds upon the 2017 silo concession framework implemented by the Federal Government through the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC).

Under this initiative, approximately 22 of the nation’s 33 silo complexes were transferred to private sector management to guarantee consistent grain supply and affordability across Nigeria.

According to Senator Kyari, “Among the 17 silo complexes allocated to five private firms, Flour Mills of Nigeria-managing three silo complexes through three distinct Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs)-is the only company that has fulfilled all stipulated conditions and is operating at peak efficiency.”

FMN’s engagement in agriculture dates back to 1978 with the strategic acquisition of a 10,000-hectare farm in Kaboji, Niger State. This move was part of a broader expansion plan aimed at enhancing value within the sugar production chain and minimizing dependence on imported raw materials.

Over the years, FMN has heavily invested in cultivating a diverse range of crops such as soybeans, palm fruits, cassava, wheat, maize, sugarcane, and sorghum. The company also focuses on the storage, collection, and distribution of grains sourced locally, reinforcing its role in Nigeria’s agricultural ecosystem.

Reflecting on FMN’s enduring dedication to nourishing and uplifting millions daily, Group CEO Boye Olusanya remarked, “Flour Mills of Nigeria is not just a business entity but a vital partner in Nigeria’s socio-economic progress. For more than sixty years, we have provided livelihoods to countless Nigerian families through both direct and indirect employment opportunities.”

He added, “Unlike many other enterprises, we have safeguarded our national legacy with integrity, ensuring that our operations remain sustainable for the country, the environment, and most importantly, the people.”

Olusanya further emphasized, “FMN exemplifies the powerful synergy that can exist between leading private sector players and national economic strategies. Our steadfast investments in backward integration, import substitution, and empowering farmers underscore our commitment to aligning with Nigeria’s developmental goals.”

“We continue to be a reliable partner to the federal government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, under Senator Abubakar Kyari’s visionary leadership, in advancing transformative initiatives aimed at achieving food self-sufficiency in Nigeria.”

Established on September 29, 1960, as a limited liability company and Nigeria’s pioneering wheat miller, Flour Mills of Nigeria has grown into one of Africa’s foremost brands in the food and agro-allied sectors.
