The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has urged demonstrators advocating for #FreeNnamdiKanu, along with other groups, to adhere strictly to a recent judicial directive that limits protests in designated areas of Abuja. The police have warned that any efforts to disturb public peace will be met with decisive enforcement measures.
On October 17, 2025, the Federal High Court in Abuja, under the jurisdiction of Justice M.G. Umar, issued an injunction in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2202/2025 – Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Omoyele Sowore & 4 others.
This court order bars the defendants and their affiliates from organizing demonstrations near critical government sites such as Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly Complex, Force Headquarters, the Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.
In a press release issued on Saturday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, emphasized the police’s dedication to enforcing the law and protecting public safety, while simultaneously respecting citizens’ rights to peaceful protest and free speech.
“The judiciary’s ruling is intended to protect constitutional rights, not to curtail them,” the statement clarified.
CSP Hundeyin called on all factions-whether supporting or opposing the campaign for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release-to act responsibly and within legal limits.
The police also advised both protesters and counter-demonstrators to avoid restricted areas and refrain from any behavior that could incite clashes or disrupt public tranquility.
Security forces have been strategically positioned throughout the Federal Capital Territory to facilitate smooth traffic flow, protect lives and property, and uphold peace, according to the statement.
The NPF further cautioned that individuals who exploit protests to commit violent acts, carry arms, damage property, or engage in unlawful conduct will face arrest and prosecution under applicable laws.
“Those who provoke unrest via social media or other communication channels will be monitored and held accountable through digital forensic evidence,” the release added.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has instructed the FCT Commissioner of Police and other relevant units to rigorously implement the court’s directive and ensure the security of residents and legitimate activities within the capital city.
“Organizers and participants are advised to steer clear of prohibited zones, avoid carrying weapons or engaging in inflammatory behavior, and pursue their concerns through lawful means,” the statement urged.
“The Force reassures law-abiding citizens that comprehensive security measures are in place and encourages everyone to continue their daily routines without apprehension,” it concluded.
