The recent coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the new Olubadan of Ibadanland has sparked widespread criticism, particularly targeting the performance of renowned fuji artist Taye Currency. The event, held today, marked the official installation of Oba Ladoja following the passing of his predecessor, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, two months prior.
During the ceremony, Taye Currency, invited as the headline performer, faced backlash over his choice of lyrics, notably the phrase “were la fi n wo were,” which translates to “insanity was used to cure insanity.” This line quickly ignited controversy and propelled the musician to trending status on the social media platform X.
The coronation attracted several prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde, the Soun of Ogbomoso Oba Ghandi Adeoye, the Oluwo of Iwo Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale, and the Alaafin of Oyo Oba Akeem Owoade.
Voices on X expressed strong disapproval of Taye Currency’s performance, with many questioning the appropriateness of his song for such a solemn occasion. Some users argued that the organizers erred in selecting an artist whose peak popularity was nearly two decades ago, suggesting that other celebrated Ibadan musicians like Osupa, K1 De Ultimate, Paso, or Malaika would have been more fitting choices.
Here are some reactions from the platform:
@olatunbosun006: “This is a disgrace to his family, not the people of Ibadan. Why on a coronation day?”
@Fortune4me_ola: “Who authorized him to perform such rubbish at the coronation?”
@OluwaferanmiDan: “The fault lies with the event planners for giving the stage to someone whose last hit was 17 years ago. Using madness to cure madness at a coronation? Only madness.”
@babasafeez: “This is clearly political. Why choose Taye over Osupa or K1? Even Paso and Malaika would have delivered better. Please, no more madness.”
@fesooyebade: “A historic letdown and embarrassment to Ibadan natives both locally and abroad. The songs were unsuitable for this landmark event. There are countless Ibadan-born artists who could have given a memorable performance.”
