Israel has conveyed deep sorrow for the innocent Palestinian lives lost amid the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza, emphasizing the value placed on every human life affected by the war.
During a commemorative event in Abuja on Sunday marking the second anniversary of the conflict sparked by the October 7, 2023 assault on southern Israel, Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, shared these sentiments. The attack by Hamas militants resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israeli civilians and the abduction of 200 hostages.
The gathering featured poignant virtual accounts from survivors of the October 7 attack, reinforcing Israel’s commitment to preventing any recurrence of such brutal aggression on its territory.
Ambassador Freeman remarked, “As we honor the memory of those lost on October 7, we also extend our heartfelt condolences to the innocent Palestinians who have perished in this conflict-a war Israel neither sought nor initiated, but one imposed upon us.”
He underscored that Israel’s military campaign in Gaza aims solely to dismantle Hamas militants, not to seize or colonize land. Freeman refuted claims that Israelis are outsiders in their homeland, affirming their deep-rooted historical connection.
“We are indigenous to Israel; this is not foreign territory to us. Jewish communities have thrived in Jerusalem, Tiberias, Hebron, Tsfat, and across our land for over three millennia. Even during exile, our prayers faced Jerusalem, and the city remained central to our traditions-celebrated at weddings, festivals, and family meals alike.”
“We revitalized our language, cultivated forests, reunited dispersed communities, embraced survivors, and established a thriving, innovation-driven economy in a nation reborn.”
“Israel’s foundation was not a consequence of the Holocaust, but a testament to resilience despite it. Our nation stands not on sympathy, but on bravery, faith, and a rich historical legacy.”
“Today, ‘Never Again’ transcends a mere phrase. It is embodied by the Iron Dome shielding children in Sderot, the Israeli pilot soaring above, and the young soldier in uniform guarding our homes so that our children may rest peacefully.”
Freeman also expressed appreciation for former U.S. President Donald Trump, acknowledging his unwavering support, courage in confronting uncomfortable truths, and pivotal role in securing the release of hostages and advancing efforts to bring the conflict to a close.
