Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s candidate for the Lagos State governorship in the 2023 elections, has addressed a widely circulated video showing leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos allegedly directing their members to avoid cooperating with opposition party affiliates within the lagos-govt-reopens-oko-oba-abattoir/” title=”… govt reopens Oko-Oba Abattoir”>state.
In the footage, a union official is seen reprimanding members from the Ajeromi/Ifelodun local government area for associating with individuals outside the APC. He emphatically declared the union’s unwavering allegiance to the APC, dismissing all other parties in Lagos as illegitimate. The leader further warned that the events of 2023 would not be allowed to recur in 2027.
“The APC is our party here in Lagos. Any other party is a fake, whether you accept it or not. We say this openly. What happened in your area at Ajegunle, where some acted as if nothing occurred, will not be tolerated again. If it does, those involved will face suspension.
Any transport worker who misbehaves must be suspended with evidence. No one should reinstate such a person. Even in their neighborhood, we will make life difficult for them.
We take the APC seriously in Lagos.
Do not expect the 2023 scenario to repeat in 2027. Anyone who errs or misbehaves then will be dealt with accordingly. Inform them clearly: it is the APC they must vote for.”
Another union figure was also recorded insisting that members cannot act against the APC, which he claimed provides their livelihood.
Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour shared the video on social media, interpreting the union leaders’ hostility as a reaction to his successful political rally in Ajegunle. He asserted that their threats do not intimidate him.
“Violence is the refuge of those who lack competence.
The @OfficialDSSNG is undoubtedly aware of the NURTW’s orders to its members to attack, intimidate, disrupt, and harm opposition events in Lagos, as witnessed during my declaration in Alimosho and now following our victorious gathering in Ajeromi.
The President and his APC allies have governed Lagos for over 24 years without any substantial achievements to showcase. Instead, they resort to mobilizing groups like this to suppress opposition voices, all while sending their own families abroad to enjoy the benefits of good governance.
By branding opposition supporters as “enemies of the President” and threatening those who refuse to comply, they aim to undermine democracy through fear.
Let it be clear: we will not be cowed. This statement is on record to affirm that no one holds a monopoly on violence. When conflict arises, you will see that we are many, and you are few.
We are not insignificant, nor will we stand idly by. We are not afraid of confrontation.”
