Globacom, a leading name in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, has officially confirmed its sponsorship of the upcoming Ofala Festival, set to take place in Onitsha, Anambra State, in October 2025.
This culturally rich festival is an annual tradition upheld by His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha. The festivities will span two days, featuring the Iru Ofala ceremony on October 17 and the Azu Ofala on October 18.
Globacom, the principal sponsor since 2011, reiterated its dedication to the festival during a press event hosted by the Ofala Festival Organising Committee at the Obi’s Palace. The company emphasized its belief in Nigeria’s rich cultural legacy and the festival’s capacity to generate employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth. Globacom also reaffirmed its ambition to elevate the festival onto the international stage.
“By 2025, Nigeria’s tourism industry is expected to contribute approximately ₦11.2 trillion to the nation’s GDP, an increase from ₦10.9 trillion in 2024. Domestic tourism spending is projected to reach ₦6.1 trillion, while international visitor expenditures are estimated at ₦803.2 billion. These statistics not only reflect a robust recovery from recent setbacks but also highlight significant growth potential. They affirm a fundamental reality: culture and tourism are essential pillars of our economy, identity, and future prosperity,” the company stated.
“Globacom is dedicated to advancing this vision. Our ongoing support for the Ofala Festival aligns with our broader conviction that investing in cultural initiatives yields benefits beyond financial returns-it fosters community development, creates jobs, supports local enterprises, and instills pride,” the statement added.
In addition to sponsorship, Globacom revealed plans to enhance the festival experience for its customers through exclusive offers. The company is rolling out a tailored package for subscribers, alongside continued expansion and upgrades of its network infrastructure nationwide, with a focus on boosting 4G-LTE coverage in regions such as the South East. This will ensure improved voice and data services for all users during the festival period.
Recently, Globacom introduced two new subscriber benefits: the Talkmasta plan, which provides additional talk time and data at no extra charge, and the Welcome Bonus, offering new customers exceptional perks upon joining the Glo network.
Mr. Nnaemeka Maduegbuna, Chairman of the Strategic Marketing and Communications Committee, outlined the festival’s schedule, beginning with the annual lecture series on October 7. This will be followed by the Oreze Art Exhibition showcasing diverse Nigerian and African artworks, the Ofala Youth Carnival on October 15, a Medical, Health, and Wellbeing Community Outreach, the Iru Ofala ceremony on October 17, the Azu Ofala on October 18, and culminating with a Royal Banquet honoring Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe on October 22.
He assured attendees that comprehensive arrangements have been made to guarantee a memorable and secure event, prioritizing the comfort and safety of all visitors. The press conference was attended by senior palace officials and members of the festival’s organizing committee.
