Governor Inuwa Yahaya Mandates Immediate Evaluation of Erosion Damage in Gombe City and Surrounding Areas

In response to the recent destruction caused by flooding and erosion within Gombe Metropolis, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has directed all relevant ministries and agencies to promptly conduct thorough inspections of the affected zones. The goal is to swiftly assess the extent of damage and propose actionable solutions to protect both public infrastructure and private properties.
Following the governor’s instructions, the Commissioner for Works and Transport, represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Danladi Adamu, spearheaded a delegation to carry out detailed evaluations across the impacted locations.
The team surveyed nine critical sites where heavy rains had severely compromised roads, bridges, and other public assets in Gombe and its environs.
During the field visit, the Permanent Secretary emphasized that this initiative aligns with the governor’s proactive approach to disaster management and infrastructure preservation.
“Governor Yahaya, deeply committed to the welfare of his constituents, mandated an immediate and comprehensive assessment of all erosion-affected areas. We have now completed on-site inspections at nine key points,” he explained.
“Our findings will inform prioritized recommendations for urgent repairs, alongside strategies for sustainable, long-term mitigation,” he added.
He reassured the public that the administration remains dedicated to resolving these challenges to maintain public safety and infrastructure integrity.
Additionally, he urged local communities to actively protect government investments-particularly roads and drainage systems-by refraining from dumping waste indiscriminately or constructing on natural waterways.
The inspection covered multiple vulnerable spots, including the road collapse near Orji Quarters adjacent to Yahuza Suya, the Shehu Abubakar District close to the ongoing High Court construction, Gadan Dahiru Deba in Pantami, Jekadafari near Gambo Isari’s residence, as well as Madaki, Kundulum, and Tumfure, all recognized as erosion hotspots.
Engineer Imran Khan from Triacta Nigeria Ltd highlighted the technical difficulties encountered, citing hidden water channels and increased runoff caused by urban expansion and certain development activities.
He assured that Triacta would work closely with agencies such as GOSUPDA to restore natural drainage paths and implement effective erosion control measures.
Local resident Mr. Sam Uso of Orji Quarters, whose property was impacted by a collapsed bridge, praised the government’s prompt intervention to restore access and protect community livelihoods.
Officials noted that while some sites demand immediate repair, others will be incorporated into the ongoing comprehensive gully erosion control initiatives to ensure lasting solutions.
The assessment team comprised representatives from the Ministries of Works, Housing and Transport, Water Resources, Forest and Environment, GOSUPDA, and Triacta Nigeria Ltd, among others.
Since taking office, Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s administration has consistently prioritized world-class infrastructure development and erosion management projects. Notable efforts include the 21-kilometer FCE(T)-Unguwa Uku Gully Erosion Project and the expansive multi-billion naira gully erosion control scheme extending over 18 kilometers from Abdullahi Ganduje Road to the Doma area on Gombe’s eastern outskirts.
