At its 11th Governing Council session, Yakubu Gowon University (previously known as the University of Abuja), under the leadership of Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, sanctioned the elevation of 104 academic personnel to professorial positions.
This decision was finalized during the 78th Extraordinary Council Meeting, convened over two days-Tuesday and Wednesday, September 9-10, 2025-at the University’s Main Campus in Abuja.
According to a statement released by Dr. Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, 58 staff members were promoted to full Professors, while 46 were advanced to Associate Professors.
The promotions spanned a diverse array of academic fields, including but not limited to agriculture, animal science, Islamic studies, Islamic history and ethics, clinical sciences, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology, ophthalmology, theatre arts, social science education, civil engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, pharmacology, statistics, applied mathematics, nursing, and allied health sciences.
Expressing his congratulations, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mathew Adamu (fcvsn), praised the promoted academics for their unwavering dedication to research and knowledge dissemination.
He remarked, “This advancement is a testament to your relentless effort, scholarly excellence, and steadfast commitment to the University’s mission and growth. We anticipate that your elevated roles will fuel further accomplishments in teaching, research, mentorship, and community engagement.”
Professor Adamu further highlighted the significance of this milestone, stating, “The sheer number of promotions to professorial ranks marks the highest in the University’s history. This accomplishment reflects the Council’s and management’s dedication to recognizing merit and enhancing our academic workforce during this pivotal phase of the University’s evolution.”
He also assured the academic community, “With the current stability within the University, we foresee even greater successes ahead. I am confident that this renewed focus on timely and meaningful recognition will propel us closer to becoming a world-class institution.”
