Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has publicly endorsed the upcoming #FreeNnamdiKanu protest march set for October 20 in Abuja.
This peaceful demonstration, spearheaded by Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), aims to urge the government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu has been held since his arrest in Kenya in 2021.
The protest has attracted backing from notable figures such as ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights advocate Femi Falana, and former Kaduna senator Shehu Sani. Adding his voice to the chorus, Obi, the ex-governor of Anambra State, declared his support on Wednesday, emphasizing that Kanu deserves freedom as he has not been convicted of any offense.
During a visit to LEA Primary School in Kapwa, Abuja, accompanied by Dr. Moses Paul, the African Democratic Congress candidate for Abuja Municipal Area Council chairmanship, Obi reiterated his stance that Kanu’s arrest was unnecessary.
He highlighted his long-held belief that dialogue, rather than detention, is the most effective way to address separatist movements.
“My position on Nnamdi Kanu has always been clear: his arrest was unwarranted,” Obi stated.
“I have consistently advocated for consultation, negotiation, and open discussions with anyone expressing grievances. There is nothing wrong with engaging in dialogue. Whatever actions are taken, they must adhere to the law. I appreciate the efforts of the organizers and participants in this cause.”
Obi also praised Sowore and others leading the #FreeNnamdiKanu campaign, underscoring that peaceful conversations are essential to resolving such conflicts.
“I commend those who are echoing what I have long advocated. Reviewing my statements from 2020, 2022, and even 2024, it’s clear that the rule of law must prevail-not only for Nnamdi Kanu but for all activists nationwide,” he added.
