Abdulmawal Ibrahim Adam, a 27-year-old Sudanese national residing illegally in the UK, has been found guilty of trying to kidnap a 17-year-old girl in Swindon, Wiltshire. The attempted abduction was thwarted thanks to the swift actions of bus passengers who intervened and protected the teenager.
The alarming event took place at approximately 9:30 p.m. as the young girl was returning home from her job. Surveillance footage captured Adam sprinting toward her at a pedestrian crossing, seizing her from behind, and forcibly dragging her across the street against her consent.
Luckily, several bystanders on a nearby bus witnessed the assault, quickly intervened, and prevented Adam from abducting the victim.
Eyewitnesses reported that after being stopped, Adam attempted to approach two other women; one managed to escape, while he pursued the other before fleeing the scene.
The victim’s mother contacted the police later that night. Authorities arrested Adam shortly afterward and charged him with attempted kidnapping.
Despite initially refusing to cooperate during the investigation and court hearings, Adam eventually admitted guilt at Swindon Crown Court on Tuesday, October 14.
Detective Constable Anna McCormack of Swindon CID commended both the victim’s courage and the public’s prompt response:
“This was an extremely distressing experience for the young woman, and I want to acknowledge her resilience throughout this ordeal. I also extend my gratitude to the members of the public whose quick thinking and intervention likely averted a far worse tragedy.”
Adam, who entered the UK illegally from Darfur, Sudan, in September 2023, had previously admitted to unlawful entry at Canterbury Crown Court. He served a seven-month prison sentence for that offence before his release.
Presiding Judge James Townsend at Swindon Crown Court has requested a pre-sentence report to better understand Adam’s background ahead of sentencing scheduled for December 12.
Court documents reveal that Adam frequently refused to attend hearings, often declining to leave his cell at HM Prison Bullingdon, resulting in multiple delays and adjournments.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Dale Sheehan stated:
“Abdulmawal Ibrahim Adam targeted a vulnerable teenager walking alone, subjecting her to a terrifying experience by grabbing her from behind. The courage of the public who stepped in and captured evidence was crucial in achieving this conviction. Violence against women and girls will never be tolerated.”
A spokesperson from the Home Office added:
“We are committed to removing foreign nationals who commit serious offences in the UK. In our first year, the government deported nearly 5,200 foreign national offenders, marking a 14% increase compared to the previous year.”
Adam remains detained as authorities continue to review his immigration status and consider deportation proceedings.
