Nigeria Immigration Service Announces New Passport Fees Effective September 2025
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has revealed a revision in the cost of passport applications, set to take effect starting September 1, 2025. This update specifically targets applications submitted within Nigeria’s borders.
Updated Passport Pricing Structure
According to a recent announcement by the NIS Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, the fee for a 32-page passport valid for five years will increase to ₦100,000. Meanwhile, the 64-page passport, which offers a ten-year validity period, will now be priced at ₦200,000.
Fees for Nigerians Applying Abroad Remain Stable
The Service emphasized that the fee adjustments do not affect Nigerians applying for passports outside the country. For overseas applicants, the 32-page passport continues to cost $150, and the 64-page passport remains at $230.
Rationale Behind the Fee Increase
The NIS explained that the fee hike aims to maintain the high standards and security features of Nigerian passports, ensuring their global acceptance and reliability. At the same time, the Service is committed to keeping the process affordable for Nigerian citizens.
Context and Implications
This fee revision aligns with global trends where many countries have adjusted passport fees to cover enhanced security measures and inflationary pressures. For instance, in 2024, several nations increased passport costs to fund biometric upgrades and anti-fraud technologies. Nigeria’s move reflects a similar commitment to safeguarding its travel documents amid rising international security demands.
Citizens planning to renew or apply for passports within Nigeria should prepare for the new fees starting next year. The NIS continues to encourage timely applications to avoid last-minute inconveniences.
