Kaduna SDP Refutes Merger Claims with ADC, Challenges El-Rufai’s Assertions

The Kaduna State branch of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has firmly rejected recent allegations made by former governor Nasir El-Rufai, who claimed that the party’s organizational framework in the state has disintegrated and merged with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Clarifying the Party’s Position Amid Merger Rumors

Over the weekend, El-Rufai, together with several opposition figures, announced what they termed a “strategic realignment,” asserting that the SDP in Kaduna had effectively integrated into the ADC. This announcement sparked widespread speculation about the future of the SDP in the region.

However, in a statement released on Monday, Adamu Idris, the SDP State Chairman, categorically denied these claims, emphasizing that the party’s structure remains fully operational and vibrant throughout Kaduna State. Idris criticized El-Rufai’s comments as a calculated effort to create discord and weaken the party’s influence.

Strengthening the SDP’s Foundations and Vision

Idris highlighted the party’s ongoing commitment to consolidating its grassroots support and positioning itself as a formidable opposition force that genuinely represents the aspirations of Nigerians. “The SDP in Kaduna is resilient and active. Our focus is on fortifying our base and advancing a credible political alternative,” he stated.

Reflecting on El-Rufai’s Tenure within the SDP

The party also revisited El-Rufai’s brief involvement with the SDP, attributing a period of internal turmoil and factional disputes to his leadership. According to the SDP, stability and unity were restored only after his exit, underscoring the party’s resilience and capacity for self-correction.

Strong Rebuttal to El-Rufai’s Characterization

In a pointed response, the SDP accused the former governor of lacking commitment to democratic principles, labeling him as “authoritarian, self-interested, and intolerant.” The party’s statement described El-Rufai as embodying traits contrary to the democratic values the SDP upholds.

Commitment to Democratic Ideals and Future Prospects

Despite the controversy, the SDP reassured its members and supporters of its unwavering dedication to democracy, effective governance, and national unity. The party vowed to resist any attempts to damage its reputation or derail its preparations ahead of upcoming elections.
