Kaduna Tertiary Institution Workers End Strike Following Governor’s Approval of New Salary Structure

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has authorized the rollout of 70% of the 2024 CONPCASS/CONTEDISS salary scale for employees of state-owned tertiary institutions, with the implementation set to begin in October 2025.

This decision underscores the administration’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of workers and rejuvenating the educational sector within the state.

The approval came after a crucial meeting between Governor Sani and representatives of the Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions (JUTIKS), which led to the suspension of a strike that had lasted for a month.

The discussion took place at the Government House in Kaduna and was coordinated by the Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), headed by Comrade Ayuba Suleiman. Attendees included delegates from both academic and non-academic unions representing Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria; College of Education, Gidan Waya; and the Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery, which has campuses in Kaduna, Kafanchan, and Pambegua.

The unions had initiated industrial action starting September 30, 2025, citing concerns over the implementation of the 2009 CONPCASS/CONTEDISS salary framework, retirement benefits, and overall staff welfare in the state’s tertiary institutions.

Following the meeting, union leaders held a joint press briefing in Kaduna, expressing gratitude to Governor Sani for his “responsive leadership, transparency, and steadfast dedication to the welfare of workers and the progress of education in Kaduna State.”

Among the significant resolutions from the dialogue was the immediate adoption of 70% of the 2024 CONPCASS/CONTEDISS salary structure for both teaching and non-teaching personnel in the tertiary institutions.

Additionally, the unions secured approval for a retirement age of 65 years and a 40-year service tenure policy specifically for non-academic staff.

The unions’ stance was collectively supported by key figures including Comrade Ayuba Suleiman, NLC Chairman of Kaduna State; Comrade Usman Shehu Suleiman, Chairman of JUTIKS/ASUP at Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic; Comrade Shuaibu Dauda Adamu, JUTIKS Secretary General; Comrade Nuhu Yerima Christopher, Chairman of COESU at College of Education, Gidan Waya; Comrade Mahmud Aliyu Kwarbai, Chairman of NASU at Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic; and Comrade Daniel Danboyi, Chairman of the Academic Staff Union at the College of Nursing.
