The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Kano State has officially announced the transfer of Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, a convicted Islamic scholar, to a federal correctional facility.
According to a press release from the Command’s spokesperson, Musbahu K/Nassarawa, this move is part of a routine administrative process governed by the Nigerian Correctional Service Act of 2019. The decision to relocate inmates considers factors such as security protocols, inmate classification, availability of facilities, and rehabilitation requirements.
“Relocating Malam Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara to a federal custodial institution aligns with our standard operational procedures and statutory duties,” K/Nassarawa explained.
He further clarified that this transfer does not alter the cleric’s legal standing, nor does it impede his right to appeal or access to legal counsel.
“Malam Abduljabbar’s legal protections and rights remain intact under Nigerian law. His transfer will not disrupt any ongoing judicial processes or his ability to consult with his lawyers,” he assured.
K/Nassarawa also reiterated the Command’s dedication to ensuring the secure detention, rehabilitation, and reform of all inmates, consistent with the Service’s mission to uphold public safety.
It is noteworthy that in November 2022, an Upper Shariah Court in Kano sentenced Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara to death by hanging after convicting him of blasphemy against the Prophet of Islam. The cleric has since filed an appeal, and the case is currently pending before a higher court.
