Kano Government Disburses N5.6bn Councillors’ Gratuity in Exciting Second Tranche Payment

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has initiated the distribution of N5.6 billion to 1,198 former local councillors throughout the state. This payment is part of an ongoing effort to clear outstanding gratuities and allowances left unpaid by the previous administration.

This installment marks the second phase in a planned three-part repayment strategy aimed at settling a total debt of N15.67 billion inherited by the current government.

Governor Yusuf highlighted that this recent payment, made during the first cycle of May, follows an earlier disbursement of N1.8 billion to 903 councillors who served between 2014 and 2017.
Speaking to the recipients at the Government House, he characterized the payment as “an act of justice, fairness, and the restoration of honor” for those who dedicated themselves to grassroots service. He emphasized that this initiative reflects the administration’s resolve to recognize and reward the contributions of past local leaders, whose efforts were often overlooked.

“This day represents a significant milestone in Kano State’s history. We are not merely handing out funds; we are upholding a principle-that the service rendered to Kano State will always be remembered,” the governor stated, noting that many beneficiaries had already begun receiving notifications of their payments as he spoke.

He further revealed that preparations are in progress for the final payment phase, which will involve N8.2 billion to be distributed among 1,371 councillors.

The governor assured that this concluding phase is slated for completion by the second week of November 2025, thereby resolving this longstanding issue.

Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Accountant General’s Office, banking institutions, and the leadership of the former councillors’ association for their roles in facilitating the payment process.

He encouraged the recipients to manage the funds wisely to benefit their families and communities, emphasizing that this payment is both a rightful entitlement and a reaffirmation of the government’s connection with its citizens.

“This embodies justice, fairness, and the core values of our administration,” the governor concluded.
