Kano State has distinguished itself as the top-performing region in Nigeria for the 2025 National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination, marking a child/” title=”Exciting News: 2Baba and Wife Natasha Osawaru Are Expecting Their First … Together!”>significant milestone in Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s educational reform agenda.

In a press release from the Kano State Government House, Director of Media and Publicity Sanusi Bature relayed that NECO’s Registrar, Professor Ibrahim Wushishi, revealed in Minna that Kano led the country with 68,159 students achieving at least five credits, including English and Mathematics.

This figure accounts for 5.02% of the total 1,358,339 candidates nationwide. Lagos State followed closely with 67,007 students (4.93%), while Oyo State ranked third with 48,742 candidates meeting the same criteria.

Professor Wushishi further highlighted that across Nigeria, 818,492 candidates (60.26%) attained five credits or more including the core subjects of Mathematics and English. Meanwhile, 1,144,496 candidates (84.26%) secured five credits irrespective of these two essential subjects.

Bature credited this remarkable outcome to consistent and strategic investments in education, noting that the sector received the highest budgetary allocation in both 2024 and 2025. Specifically, Governor Yusuf dedicated 31% of the 2025 state budget to education, fulfilling his campaign pledge to rejuvenate a system he described as having suffered “eight years of neglect.”

Among the transformative initiatives introduced are the provision of free school uniforms and learning resources, extensive renovation of classrooms, supply of new furniture, recruitment and professional development of teachers, enhanced funding for tertiary institutions, scholarship programs, and focused efforts to promote girl-child education.

“This success is a direct result of the governor’s declaration of an education emergency and the implementation of a comprehensive recovery plan, which has revolutionized Kano’s educational environment through visionary leadership and sustained human capital investment,” Bature explained.

He also noted that this accomplishment reinforces Governor Yusuf’s accolades as Education Governor of the Year, awarded by Leadership Newspaper, Blueprint Newspaper, and the Nigeria Union of Teachers.

“Our reforms are bearing fruit, and this exceptional performance confirms that Kano is progressing on the right trajectory,” Bature affirmed.

Quoting Governor Yusuf, Bature emphasized that education remains the administration’s foremost priority, with ongoing efforts to ensure every child in Kano State has access to quality learning opportunities.
