Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the legal representative of the detained leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has publicly disclosed that he is facing serious threats to his life due to his role in defending the Biafra activist.
In a podcast interview aired on Monday, Ejimakor revealed that since Kanu’s landmark legal victory against the Nigerian government over his unlawful rendition from Kenya in June 2021, he has been subjected to intimidation and attempts at blackmail.
During the conversation with host Chief Chidi Nwanyanwu, the lawyer detailed how his involvement in the case has attracted hostile actions aimed at undermining his safety and professional integrity.
“Some individuals have resorted to blackmail, exploiting the success of this case to manipulate asylum processes worldwide. What greater injustice could there be than that?” Ejimakor questioned.
“Similarly, when I won the case at the Enugu State High Court under extremely challenging circumstances, I encountered numerous threats against my wellbeing. Navigating these pressures while maintaining composure has only been possible through divine grace.”
“Since taking on these cases in 2021, I have visibly aged; the burden has been heavy, yet I continue my work with resilience, dignity, and pride.”
“When I submitted the petition to revoke IPOB’s classification as a terrorist organization, detractors accused me of not being an IPOB lawyer. But how can one dispute success?”
“I am advocating on your behalf, yet some deny my role. If I am Nnamdi Kanu’s counsel, and he entrusts me with his defense-as is publicly known-then by extension, I am indeed IPOB’s lawyer.”
“Occasionally, I face legal hurdles because the Federal Government challenges my standing to file these cases, submitting various motions and evidence against me. Nevertheless, I have consistently prevailed.”
