Kelechi Iheanacho, the Super Eagles forward, has officially joined Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, according to Soccernet.ng.
On the final day of the transfer window, all attention was on Iheanacho as he was anticipated to depart Sevilla, where he was no longer in the club’s plans.
Earlier reports from Soccernet.ng linked the 28-year-old striker, who will turn 29 this October, with moves to Turkish Super Lig sides Besiktas and Samsunspor, as well as Mexican outfit Pumas UNAM.
There were also rumors linking Iheanacho with newly promoted La Liga side Real Oviedo, but none of these potential transfers materialized.
On transfer deadline day, Sevilla confirmed they had mutually agreed to terminate Iheanacho’s contract, freeing him from any club obligations.
This contract termination meant Iheanacho could sign with any club even after the closure of the transfer window in most leagues.
Shortly after, Celtic announced they had secured Iheanacho’s signature on a one-year contract, with an option to extend for an additional year.
Although the Scottish Premiership transfer window closed alongside the top five European leagues on Monday, Iheanacho’s status as a free agent allowed him to join Celtic outside the usual deadline.
This move marks Iheanacho’s fifth professional club, following spells at Manchester City, Leicester City, Sevilla, and Middlesbrough. Notably, he reunites with Brendan Rodgers, his former manager at Leicester City.
The Nigerian international aims to rediscover his peak form and contribute significantly to Celtic’s quest to defend their Scottish Premiership crown.
Kelechi Iheanacho Joins Celtic as Third Super Eagles Player
With this transfer, Iheanacho becomes the third Nigerian international to sign for Celtic.
He follows in the footsteps of Efe Ambrose, who earned 47 caps for Nigeria, and Ibrahim Rabiu, who represented the Super Eagles four times.
