The Kogi State Government has expressed profound sorrow upon learning of the tragic boat accident that took place on the River Niger on Tuesday evening.
The incident involved a group of traders journeying from Ibaji Local Government Area in Kogi State to the Illushi Market located in Edo State.
In an official release by Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, the government mourned the loss of at least 26 lives, describing the event as a devastating tragedy.

Fanwo conveyed Governor Usman Ododo’s assurance that the state administration will strengthen its partnership with federal agencies to enhance safety protocols on the waterways, aiming to avert similar disasters in the future.
He also urged residents, particularly those in riverine areas, to prioritize safety by refraining from overloading vessels and consistently using life jackets and other safety equipment during water travel.
“The people and government of Kogi State are deeply saddened by the news of the boat accident on the River Niger, which involved traders traveling from Ibaji to Illushi Market in Edo State,” the statement read.
“Preliminary reports confirm that this unfortunate event has resulted in the deaths of no fewer than 26 passengers. This is a profound loss, and our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families of the victims and the entire Ibaji community during this difficult time.”
“His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, the Executive Governor of Kogi State, extends sincere condolences to the grieving families and has instructed relevant agencies, including the State Emergency Management Agency, to collaborate with local authorities to deliver immediate assistance and relief to those impacted.”
“The Governor further pledged that the state government will escalate ongoing initiatives with federal partners to bolster safety measures on our waterways to prevent such tragedies from recurring.”
“We call on all citizens, especially those residing in riverine communities, to always prioritize safety by avoiding vessel overcapacity and by wearing life jackets and adhering to other safety precautions whenever traveling by water,” he added.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to providing support and comfort to the people of Ibaji Local Government Area as they navigate this period of mourning.
