A tragic incident unfolded in Lagos State’s Ijora district when a 40-foot container toppled onto a commercial tricycle, resulting in the deaths of two passengers, one of whom was a police officer.
The accident, which took place on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, also left the tricycle driver and another passenger with critical injuries.
Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), confirmed the event and stated that the injured individuals are currently receiving intensive medical treatment.
According to Taofiq, security forces swiftly intervened to calm agitated bystanders who had attempted to set fire to the container truck involved in the crash.
“LASTMA confirms a grievous accident earlier today on Ijora Causeway near Ijora 7Up, involving a fully loaded 40-foot container truck with registration XP 368 AKD. The vehicle overturned onto a commercial tricycle, KJA 364 QN, carrying unsuspecting passengers,” the statement detailed.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the articulated truck lost control while attempting a risky maneuver beneath the Ijora Bridge, causing it to overturn and fatally crush the tricycle. Tragically, two passengers, including a serving police officer, died instantly.
Security operatives transported the police officer’s remains to the morgue in Yaba, while the family of the female victim rushed to the scene to recover her body.
In a coordinated rescue effort led by LASTMA and emergency responders, two other individuals, including the tricycle driver, were rescued alive but suffered severe fractures to both legs.
The injured were promptly taken by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) to Jimsan Hospital in Gasikiya, Ijora, for urgent medical care.
To prevent disorder, combined security teams from Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri Police Divisions established strong security perimeters around the accident site.
Their presence helped to quell the unrest among onlookers who had tried to ignite the container truck and ensured the safety of emergency personnel during the rescue operations.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended heartfelt sympathies to the families of the deceased police officer and the female passenger, describing the accident as profoundly sorrowful and unfortunate.
He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the two survivors who remain under close medical supervision.
Furthermore, Bakare-Oki commended the swift and professional response of the emergency and security agencies, whose efforts prevented additional casualties and contained the situation effectively.
The Authority reiterates its urgent appeal to truck drivers and operators of articulated vehicles to exercise extreme caution, especially when navigating bridges, intersections, and busy traffic zones, to prevent similar devastating accidents in the future.
