The Lagos State government has lagos/” title=”Olamide Unveils “Olamidé” at Star-Studded Breakfast & Coffee Listening Event in …”>officially launched two cutting-edge Advanced Smart Modular High Dependency Units (ASMOHDUs) at the General Hospitals in Ifako-Ijaiye and Mushin.
During the inauguration ceremony at Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, the Governor’s special health adviser, reflected on Lagos State’s significant progress in developing modern High Dependency Units (HDUs). She noted that a decade ago, such facilities were nonexistent within the public healthcare infrastructure.
“A decade ago, when I first joined the health sector, there were no HDUs in the state. The pioneering unit was established at Gbagada, an initiative championed by the then First Lady,” she recalled.
Dr. Ogunyemi emphasized that the establishment of HDUs was a strategic response to the state’s challenges with maternal and child mortality rates.
“The T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda prioritizes accessibility, affordability, and quality-three core values that guide our healthcare mission. These newly commissioned HDUs embody this commitment by providing timely, critical care to every resident of Lagos,” she stated.
She painted a poignant picture of the struggles many women endure during childbirth, underscoring the emotional and physical hardships caused by maternal health complications.
“Consider a mother arriving at the hospital hopeful and joyful, only to face unforeseen complications. Many of these outcomes are avoidable, and HDUs equip us to act swiftly, stabilizing patients and preserving lives,” she explained.
Highlighting the innovative nature of the Smart Modular HDU, Ogunyemi described it as a fusion of advanced technology and compassionate care. “This is more than just a room with equipment; it’s an intelligent, adaptive space where every moment is vital. The Governor’s vision centers on one goal: saving lives-whether mothers, newborns, or trauma patients,” she added.
In his address, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Health, shared that the commissioning of these units represents the realization of a long-held personal and organizational aspiration.
