The Lagos State Police Command has formally charged Samsideen Oladiti, widely known as Shamelon and a notable figure within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos, in connection with the alleged killing of a dispatch rider.
At 55 years old, Oladiti appeared before the Ebute Metta Magistrate Court 2 on Tuesday following his arrest on charges of assault and homicide.
According to Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Babaseyi Oluseyi, the incident took place on Lagos Island on September 17, 2025, around 3:00 p.m.
“The accused reportedly assaulted the dispatch rider using a helmet and his fists, causing grave injuries. The victim was immediately taken to a hospital, placed on oxygen support, and is currently undergoing medical care,” Oluseyi explained.
The arrest came after supporters of the victim staged a violent demonstration at Sandgrouse Market, the location of Oladiti’s office.
“Upon hearing of the victim’s death, mourners gathered and violently protested at the suspect’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, setting two of his motorcycles on fire and creating chaos in the vicinity,” the statement added.
Police Commissioner Moshood Jimoh personally led officers to the scene to quell the disturbance before taking Oladiti into custody.
Authorities also revealed that this was not Oladiti’s first accusation involving fatal violence.
“On September 18, 2025, a separate complaint was filed against the suspect regarding an incident from August 28, 2025,” Oluseyi disclosed.
“In that case, the suspect allegedly struck a man multiple times on the head and face with a metal ring, causing critical injuries. Despite medical efforts, the victim was pronounced dead on September 17, 2025, and his remains have been sent to the morgue for an autopsy.”
The Lagos State Police Command emphasized its dedication to bringing violent offenders, especially repeat suspects in assault and murder cases, to justice.
