The Lagos State Police Command has successfully reinstated order in Owode Onirin following a violent confrontation between market traders and alleged land grabbers, which tragically resulted in three fatalities and left a police officer critically wounded.
Key Suspect Declared Wanted Amid Owode Onirin Violence
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Abiodun Ariori, the CEO of Prosperous Ariori Golden Venture Limited, has been officially declared wanted in connection with the deadly clash. The unrest severely disrupted public tranquility and caused significant road blockages around the Owode Onirin Market area.
Rapid Police Response Restores Stability
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, promptly coordinated a multi-unit police operation involving the Operations Department, Police Mobile Force, Rapid Response Squad, tactical teams, and detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department. This swift intervention led to the reopening of roads and the resumption of normal commercial activities.
“Security personnel remain deployed in the area to deter any further outbreaks of violence,” CSP Hundeyin affirmed.
Casualties and Ongoing Investigations
The violent episode claimed the lives of three civilians, who were confirmed dead upon hospital admission. Additionally, a police inspector sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving intensive medical care.
Preliminary inquiries have implicated Abiodun Ariori in orchestrating the violent incident. Despite exhaustive efforts, authorities have been unable to apprehend him, suggesting he is evading arrest. Ariori’s last known residence is in Egbeda, and the public is urged to assist by reporting any information about his location.
Disciplinary Actions Against Police Officers
In a related development, four police officers who accompanied Ariori to Lagos without authorization have been detained and are undergoing internal disciplinary proceedings. These officers are accused of participating in an unauthorized private mission. CSP Hundeyin assured that the investigation’s findings and subsequent disciplinary outcomes will be transparently communicated to the public.
Separate Incident at Balogun Market Clarified
Earlier on the same day, police intervened in a violent altercation at Balogun Market. Contrary to rumors suggesting ethnic tensions, the police clarified that the conflict was between local troublemakers rather than a tribal dispute.
At approximately 11 a.m., Ebuka Adindu from Abia State fatally stabbed Sodiq Ibrahim from Kogi State during the scuffle and subsequently inflicted a self-injury to his shoulder. Adindu is currently under police custody and receiving medical treatment; charges will be filed once he is deemed fit.
Authorities confirmed that no bystanders were harmed and no market property or goods were damaged during this incident.
Maintaining Peace and Public Cooperation
The Lagos State Police Command reiterated that the state remains largely peaceful and urged residents to avoid panic or spreading misinformation. CSP Hundeyin called on all citizens to uphold the law and collaborate with security forces to preserve peace across Lagos.
