Approximately 248,000 small-scale farmers across eight Nigerian states are set to gain from innovative climate-resilient agricultural practices and insurance schemes, thanks to a collaborative effort between Leadway Assurance, the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU), various State governments, and the PULA Foundation.
The states benefiting from this initiative include Borno, Enugu, Taraba, Ekiti, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Jigawa.
Under this arrangement, the participating state governments subsidize half of the insurance premiums for farmers, while the remaining portion is funded by donor contributions through the PULA and BAYER foundations.
This financial model makes it feasible for farmers-many of whom face significant climate-related vulnerabilities-to obtain affordable protection against environmental hazards such as drought, flooding, and pest infestations, all of which pose ongoing threats to national food security.
To further extend the reach of this program, the Harvesting Hope Caravan will embark on a nationwide tour, engaging communities across four geopolitical zones. While this caravan serves as a vital platform for raising awareness, it forms just one element of a comprehensive strategy aimed at equipping farmers with cutting-edge tools, education, and hands-on support to adapt to climate challenges and enhance agricultural output.
Ayoola Fatona, Leadway Assurance’s global head of Agricultural Risk Solutions, emphasized the broader vision behind the partnership: “Our collaboration transcends traditional insurance sales; it is about cultivating a climate-adaptive agricultural ecosystem that is resilient, inclusive, and sustainable.”
He added, “Together with PFSCU, PULA, and state authorities, we are committed to securing farmers’ livelihoods, fostering innovation, and protecting Nigeria’s food systems for generations to come.”
Gboyega Lesi, Managing Director of Leadway Assurance, also highlighted the company’s proactive role: “In the face of escalating climate threats, strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural sector is imperative. Our mission extends beyond risk coverage-we provide farmers with vital knowledge, expert advice, and access to solutions that enhance their resilience. This partnership exemplifies how public-private cooperation can safeguard livelihoods and promote enduring food security nationwide.”
The Harvesting Hope initiative exemplifies how insurance and advisory services can drive agricultural progress. By integrating climate-smart approaches into community-level outreach, Leadway and its partners are paving the way for a future-proof Nigerian agriculture sector-one that not only supports farmers but also empowers local communities and stimulates inclusive economic development.
