For the first time, Lulu has openly addressed the true nature of her connection with David Bowie, confirming that they shared a romantic and physical relationship during the 1970s. This disclosure ends decades of speculation surrounding their brief involvement, which occurred shortly after Lulu’s split from Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees in 1973.
The 76-year-old vocalist, renowned for hits like “Shout,” revealed these details in an honest interview with Fearne Cotton on the Happy Place podcast. Lulu admitted that while their relationship did include intimacy, it was far more profound than a mere casual encounter. “Honestly, I’ve never publicly said ‘Yes, I was intimate with David Bowie’ until now. I’ve always kept it private,” she confessed. “If I’m being completely truthful, I think I might have been a bit tipsy. I don’t recall all the specifics, but I do remember we were in his room and shared that moment. I’m not going to delve into the details because I can’t fully remember them, and besides, I have my limits. I’m learning to respect those boundaries.”
Beyond the physical aspect, Lulu emphasized that their bond was emotionally significant. She felt genuinely understood by Bowie. Their first encounter took place in a hotel in Sheffield, and they later joined forces musically when Lulu covered Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World.” Bowie not only produced the track but also lent his backing vocals, making it one of Lulu’s most memorable collaborations.
However, their relationship wasn’t without its challenges. Lulu recalled feeling hurt when Bowie commented on her appearance. “It was just the two of us, and he leaned in and said, ‘I think you could lose a little weight.’ That stung. I didn’t consider myself overweight, but he was so thin, and I think he wanted to reshape me into what he thought was ideal.”
Eventually, their romance came to an end, largely due to Bowie’s escalating drug use. Lulu explained, “I wish things could have lasted longer, but when I traveled to New York for more recording sessions, David was in a place I couldn’t be comfortable with because of his drug habits. I spent time there, but it didn’t progress further because I chose to return to London. You have to know when to step away, whether gently or firmly. That’s what I did with David. He probably thought I was upset with him, but I wasn’t angry-maybe just frustrated. I loved him and admired his talent, but I realized I couldn’t stay in that environment.”
David Bowie, who passed away in 2016 at 69, remains a towering figure in music history. Lulu moved forward with her life, marrying hairstylist John Frieda in 1977. They had a son, Jordan Frieda, the same year before divorcing in 1991.
