Since Ruben Amorim assumed the managerial role at Manchester United last November, the team’s performances have left much to be desired.
Ex-Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Obi has voiced his disappointment over Amorim’s inflexible tactics at Manchester United, according to Soccernet.ng.
Despite investing nearly €200 million in offensive talent during the summer transfer window, Manchester United’s start to the season has been underwhelming. The Red Devils have managed only two victories in their opening six matches, suffering three defeats along the way.
Adding to their woes, the club faced an embarrassing exit from the EFL Cup last month at the hands of Grimsby Town, a team from the fourth tier of English football.
Since taking charge in November 2024, Amorim has faced mounting criticism due to the team’s poor form. His Premier League record-17 losses in 33 games-has done little to silence doubters.
Calls have intensified recently for Amorim to reconsider his preferred 3-4-3 formation in hopes of turning the tide.
Nevertheless, the Portuguese coach has remained steadfast, refusing to alter his tactical setup.
Mikel Obi, who captained the Super Eagles and spent the majority of his career in the Premier League with Chelsea, believes Amorim’s unwillingness to adapt is detrimental.
Mikel Obi’s Perspective on Ruben Amorim’s Management at Manchester United
“I believe Amorim is a capable coach, but I question the tactical approach he insists on at Manchester United,” Mikel shared on the Obi One Podcast.
“During my career, I had the privilege of playing under some of the finest managers, and I paid close attention to their mindset and game strategies.”
“When Amorim’s team was trailing at Brentford, I anticipated a tactical shift, yet he persisted with the three-at-the-back system. Why?”
“The challenges facing him seem overwhelming, and he hasn’t found solutions. His demeanor is impacting the squad negatively.”
“Refusing to modify his lineup isn’t just stubbornness-it’s a lack of insight. Elite managers adjust their tactics; take Jurgen Klopp as an example.”
“Opponents now know exactly how to counter Manchester United. When the team is behind, Amorim must be willing to alter formations and strategies,” the former Chelsea midfielder concluded.
Should Manchester United’s poor run persist, it is increasingly likely that Amorim’s tenure at the club will come to an end in the near future.
