The federal authorities have assumed control of the emergency response following the devastating collapse of a mining pit in Kadauri Village, located within the Maru local government area of Zamfara State.
In a prompt reaction to the disaster, the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development dispatched Federal Mines Officers to Zamfara to oversee and coordinate the ongoing search and rescue mission at the affected site.
Segun Tomori, the media aide to the Minister, Dr. Dele Alake, explained that the pit’s collapse was primarily caused by intense rainfall, compounded by the hazardous practices of unauthorized miners operating illegally in the area.
Reports indicate that at least 15 artisanal miners were trapped under the debris. Rescue teams have so far recovered 13 bodies, with no survivors found, while efforts continue to locate the remaining two individuals.
Dr. Alake characterized the tragedy as both preventable and deeply regrettable, expressing heartfelt condolences for the lives lost.
“I was profoundly saddened to learn of this unfortunate event in Zamfara, which has claimed several lives. Our emergency teams have been deployed to the scene and are collaborating closely with state officials to carry out rescue operations. Following this, the site will be secured to prevent further incidents,” the Minister affirmed.
Initial findings by the Ministry indicate that the site, characterized by loose sandy soil and known for gold deposits, was being exploited through unsafe alluvial mining methods by illegal operators.
The Ministry highlighted that once gold was discovered, unregulated miners rushed in with makeshift equipment, disregarding environmental hazards and safety standards.
Dr. Alake recalled that over the past year, the Mining Marshals initiative-a specialized security unit-has apprehended more than 300 illegal miners across 10 states and the Federal Capital Territory, and has shut down 98 illicit mining locations.
He emphasized ongoing plans to enhance the capacity and reach of the Mining Marshals nationwide through improved logistics and increased personnel.
While awaiting the full findings of the investigation into the Kadauri mine disaster, the Minister vowed, “Our commitment to eradicating illegal mining activities remains unwavering. Despite the vastness of our territory, we are resolute. Utilizing satellite monitoring and other enforcement strategies, we intend to significantly reduce mining accidents and clamp down on those who finance illegal mining operations.”
The federal government extended its sympathies to the bereaved families and reassured the public that measures are being intensified to avert similar tragedies in the future.
