Engr. Abubakar Momoh, the Minister of Regional Development, has urged regional development commissions to uphold principles of equity and inclusiveness in executing their responsibilities.

He emphasized the importance of engaging all communities to foster sustainable growth and strengthen national unity.

This directive was issued during the inauguration of a two-day workshop focused on revising the policy framework of the North Central Development Commission (NCDC), held from October 7 to 8, 2025, in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

Minister Momoh highlighted that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is dedicated to ensuring that progress is not limited to metropolitan centers but reaches every region, state, and local community throughout Nigeria.

He encouraged the commissions to leverage the distinctive assets and resources within their jurisdictions-such as agriculture, mineral wealth, and human capital-to promote inclusive economic advancement.

“The North Central region stands at a pivotal point of revitalization. With its abundant agricultural resources, mineral deposits, and resilient population, it plays a crucial role in securing the nation’s food supply,” he remarked.

Commending the NCDC for crafting a strategic plan aimed at regional transformation, the minister pledged the ministry’s backing, contingent on the commission’s adherence to its primary objectives.

“Support will be unwavering as long as the commission remains aligned with its mandate; however, any deviation will result in withdrawal of support, as the ministry bears responsibility for the commissions’ outcomes,” he cautioned.

In his address, the Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmadu, encouraged participants to deepen collaborations with state governments, private sector entities, donor organizations, and local communities.

He underscored the necessity of accountability, transparency, and strategic long-term planning as foundational elements for enduring development.

Dr. Mary Ogbe, the ministry’s permanent secretary, outlined five critical focus areas for the commission: ensuring policy alignment and prioritization; implementing evidence-driven performance management; fostering local content and community engagement; enhancing partnerships and financing mechanisms; and promoting sustainability alongside cultural heritage preservation.

Dr. Cyril Tsenyil, Managing Director of the NCDC, reported that since its establishment in August, the commission has been building a robust operational framework.

“We have set up an effective organizational structure, engaged key stakeholders, and forged strategic alliances. Our collaboration with Spring has brought in experienced professionals to support discussions on governance, accountability, and peace, which are essential for sustainable development,” he explained.
