On October 7, 2025, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) executed a strategic and intelligence-led airstrike targeting illegal crude oil refining operations hidden within the creeks of Etche local government area in Rivers State.
According to Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the NAF Spokesperson, the air component carried out the strikes as part of the ongoing campaign against oil theft.
During the mission, NAF aircraft pinpointed several illicit refining facilities concealed in a thickly wooded region near Owaza.
He explained that the site was remote and showed no obvious signs of human presence, with its location verified through reliable intelligence and aerial reconnaissance.
“The aircrew executed precise strikes that successfully dismantled the illegal operations, effectively putting an end to the refining activities,” he confirmed.
Following the operation, the NAF was made aware of claims from a local group stating that the airstrikes had impacted a gin distillery in Umuebele, although no injuries were reported.
“In accordance with its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (CHMR-AP), the NAF has commenced investigations to assess the validity of these claims,” he added.
He emphasized that the Nigerian Air Force remains dedicated to upholding international standards, prioritizing the protection of Nigerian lives and property, and maintaining transparency and accountability throughout its missions.
