Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has distinguished himself as a visionary leader whose progressive policies resonate deeply with the needs and hopes of his constituents.
Since taking office two years ago, Governor Namadi has championed a transparent, inclusive administration that encourages active participation from all segments of society, fostering social and economic growth throughout Jigawa.
His steadfast dedication to enhancing agriculture, education, healthcare, and overall socio-economic welfare has begun to produce tangible improvements across the state.
Central to his transformative vision is a comprehensive 12-point strategic plan aimed at elevating Jigawa to a state of prosperity and excellence. This blueprint prioritizes infrastructure development, human capital enhancement, transparency, and accountability to optimize public service delivery.
Recognizing the pivotal role of youth and women in societal progress, Governor Namadi has implemented targeted empowerment initiatives. These programs have equipped over 600,000 young people and women with vital skills and resources, fostering employment opportunities, self-sufficiency, and poverty reduction.
In support of agricultural advancement, the government allocated N4 billion as a loan fund specifically for civil servants, benefiting more than 15,000 individuals within two years. Additionally, a N12 billion deposit was made to the Bank of Industries to provide accessible loans for small and medium enterprises.
To further bolster food security, an agricultural mechanization policy was introduced alongside other reforms, positioning Jigawa as a key contributor to national agricultural goals, a fact acknowledged by the Federal Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Abubakar Kyari.
Education has been a cornerstone of Governor Namadi’s agenda, with efforts to guarantee quality learning from primary through tertiary levels. Notable achievements include a 150% increase in annual scholarships, sponsorship of over 140 medical students to study abroad in Cyprus, recruitment of more than 7,000 teachers, renovation of over 1,000 classrooms, and construction of upwards of 300 new learning spaces.
The administration has also distributed over 50,000 student desks, provided 10,000 free school uniforms, and acquired a private university to expand higher education access. These measures have already begun to enhance academic performance statewide.
On the infrastructure front, Governor Namadi has completed 25 of 26 inherited road projects, covering more than 400 kilometers, and initiated 46 new projects spanning over 900 kilometers.
Jigawa has achieved remarkable progress in water and sanitation, with over 85% of the population now having access to clean water. The state has also been declared open-defecation-free, reflecting significant strides in public health and hygiene.
Healthcare improvements include the renovation and upgrade of 181 primary health centers. The government contributes N500 million annually to UNICEF for Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to combat child malnutrition.
Immunization rates have risen above 70%, and child stunting has decreased from 64% in 2018 to 55% in 2024, according to the National Demographic and Health Survey. The state has established five free dialysis centers and offers free treatment for hypertension, diabetes, and sickle cell disease patients.
Moreover, 143,000 vulnerable citizens are now enrolled in the Healthcare Social Insurance scheme. The workforce has been strengthened with the recruitment of 1,200 health professionals, including doctors, with plans to hire an additional 1,000. General hospitals in Gwiwa, Garki, Gantsa, Guri, and Gwaram have been modernized with improved water supply and medical equipment.
Governor Namadi’s administration is also investing in future healthcare professionals by training 187 medical students in Cyprus and launching the “Girl for Health” initiative, which supports rural girls in pursuing health science education and returning to serve their communities.
Politically, Governor Namadi is a trailblazer who actively fosters youth engagement in governance. His Government Public Engagement program (Gwamnati Da Jama’a) and deliberate inclusion of young people in leadership roles underscore his commitment to youth empowerment through education, skills development, and economic opportunities.
Young Jigawa citizens have benefited from both local and international training, including a recent delegation sent to China to learn tractor assembly and maintenance-an innovative move to enhance mechanized agriculture and strengthen food security.
Governor Namadi has revitalized the civil service by lifting the hiring freeze upon taking office and recruiting staff across educational institutions to improve public service efficiency. His administration is recognized for fair and merit-based appointments, selecting qualified individuals regardless of political ties, thereby building a competent and dedicated team aligned with his vision.
Notably, Governor Namadi respects the autonomy of the State House of Assembly, refraining from executive interference and allowing the legislature to operate independently-an embodiment of his dedication to democratic governance and institutional integrity.
Under his leadership, Jigawa State has witnessed measurable progress, laying a robust foundation for a future marked by inclusivity, self-reliance, and sustainable development. His governance has inspired hope, empowered communities, and positioned Jigawa on a trajectory of lasting growth.
