Professor Olufemi Peters, Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), encouraged the 17,611 newly enrolled students to delve into their interests and talents beyond their chosen academic fields.
Delivering his address at the university’s 29th matriculation ceremony held online, Peters emphasized the importance of exploring diverse passions alongside formal studies.
According to a statement from Ibrahim Sheme, the university’s Director of Media and Publicity, the Vice Chancellor highlighted the unique flexibility NOUN offers, urging students to leverage this advantage to fulfill both their educational and personal aspirations.
“The perseverance and discipline you cultivate here will not only benefit your academic journey at NOUN but will also be invaluable throughout your professional and personal life,” Peters remarked.
He further noted, “Your experience at NOUN transcends merely obtaining a degree; it is about evolving into a versatile, creative, and resourceful individual.”
Prof. Peters portrayed NOUN as more than an institution-it is a movement dedicated to promoting lifelong learning and inclusivity for all.
The matriculation event welcomed 17,611 new students across the university’s nationwide study centers, including 12,175 undergraduates, 5,357 postgraduate diploma and master’s candidates, 11 MPhil/PhD students, and 68 doctoral candidates.
Highlighting the advantages of Open and Distance Learning (ODL), Peters explained that unlike conventional campus-based education, this mode allows learners to study at their own pace, location, and schedule, utilizing cutting-edge educational technologies.
He reaffirmed NOUN’s commitment to delivering high-quality, accessible, and adaptable education, with a mission focused on broadening higher education access for Nigerians and others, regardless of geographical or temporal constraints.
