Tope Smart, chairman of NEM Insurance Plc, has reaffirmed his unwavering dedication to advancing the insurance-industry/” title=”CIIN Highlights the Power of Unity to Transform the … Industry”>insurance sector, while expressing gratitude to the Nigerian Association of Insurance and Pension Editors (NAIPE) for honoring him with an Award of Excellence.
As one of five distinguished recipients of the NAIPE Award of Excellence and Stewardship, Smart was recognized for his significant contributions not only within Nigeria but across Africa, notably during his tenure as president of the African Insurance Organisation (AIO).
Smart’s impressive career includes his role as former group managing director and CEO of NEM Insurance Plc, as well as his past chairmanship of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA). Throughout these leadership positions, he earned a reputation as a visionary leader and a steadfast ally to insurance journalists.
Receiving the award from the 2025 NAIPE Conference Committee at his Obanikoro, Lagos office, Smart described the accolade as a call to further elevate the insurance industry’s prominence in national conversations and policy-making.
He shared, “I firmly believe that anything worth pursuing deserves excellence. My motivation stemmed from a disparaging view of Nigerian insurance companies expressed by my university department head, who favored foreign insurers and dismissed local firms. That moment ignited my resolve to transform the industry’s image.”
Highlighting a landmark achievement, Smart pointed to the NEM Building on Ikorodu Road, which was constructed entirely without bank financing. “This building has become a symbol of pride and a benchmark for others in the sector,” he remarked.
Expressing appreciation for NAIPE members, Smart acknowledged their resilience and dedication. “Running a business is challenging, and I admire those in media who persistently champion the insurance narrative despite tough operating conditions. I remain committed to supporting your initiatives as we work together to strengthen the industry,” he affirmed.
NAIPE Chairperson Nkechi Naeche Esezobor also lauded Smart and NEM Insurance for their longstanding collaboration and support. “The NEM building set a precedent that inspired many insurance companies to invest in substantial infrastructure. Your leadership has challenged the industry to aim higher,” she said.
She added, “Recognizing contributions while individuals are still active is important to us. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we are proud to honor your impactful legacy.”
Roland Okoro, chairman of the 2025 NAIPE Annual Conference, emphasized that Smart exemplified all the qualities sought in award recipients. He encouraged Smart to continue his efforts in expanding insurance awareness, acceptance, and market penetration across Nigeria.
