Nick Woltemade continued his impressive form, netting his fourth goal in five appearances as Newcastle United secured a 2-0 triumph over Nottingham Forest at St. James’ Park on Sunday. This result intensifies the scrutiny on manager Ange Postecoglou.
The German forward, who had earlier struck the woodwork, calmly converted a penalty in the 84th minute to extend Newcastle’s advantage, following an opener from Bruno Guimarães. Despite Forest’s spirited efforts, this marked Postecoglou’s seventh match at the helm without a victory since replacing Nuno Espírito Santo.
With this outcome, Postecoglou faces mounting pressure as the international break approaches, while Forest remain in search of their first win under his guidance.
Although Newcastle did not replicate the dominant display from their recent 4-0 Champions League victory against Union St. Gilloise, they earned the three points through grit and determination, even as fatigue began to show.
Returning to St. James’ Park, former Newcastle goalkeeper Matz Sels put in a standout performance for Forest, making a crucial save from Joelinton’s early attempt after a precise assist from Kieran Trippier. Sels thwarted Joelinton again following a 15th-minute corner expertly flicked on by Sven Botman. Meanwhile, Nick Pope was called into action to parry a well-struck free-kick from Morgan Gibbs-White.
Trippier was a key defensive figure, denying former teammate Chris Wood a goal after Gibbs-White’s cross in the 22nd minute. The midfielder had skillfully controlled Sels’ clearance and linked up with Ryan Yates to challenge Newcastle’s defense.
Despite controlling possession for much of the first half, Newcastle found it difficult to break down Forest’s disciplined defensive setup, resulting in a goalless first 45 minutes.
