The Niger State Police Command has apprehended an 18-year-old male, Victor Ugwu, on charges of romance fraud and scam/” title=”Ex-Legislative Aide Goni Yilkan Sentenced to Eight Years in Prison for Employment …”>obtaining money through deceitful means.

SP Wasiu Abiodun, the command’s spokesperson, revealed in a statement dated Sunday, October 19, 2025, that Victor impersonated a woman to scam his acquaintance, Peter.

Peter explained that he reached out to Victor seeking an introduction to a female coworker. Instead, Victor disguised himself as a woman, captured selfies in female attire, and sent these images to Peter via social media, subsequently soliciting money.

Victor admitted to distributing these photos on platforms like Facebook and TikTok as part of a dating scam scheme.

“On October 16, 2025, around 6 pm, a patrol unit from Maje Division, while conducting routine surveillance along Kaduna Road, intercepted Victor Ugwu, 18, residing on Easy Life Street, Kaduna Road, engaged in a public dispute with Peter, a resident of the same area. Upon inquiry, Peter disclosed that over the past year, he had contacted Victor to facilitate a connection with a female colleague of Victor’s,” the statement detailed.

“Unexpectedly, Victor opted to impersonate a woman by dressing accordingly, taking selfies, and sending them to Peter through social media, requesting financial assistance. A subsequent search of Victor’s residence uncovered a wig and women’s clothing,” the statement continued.

“Victor confessed to sharing these images with his contacts on Facebook and TikTok to execute a dating scam and to garner one thousand viewers and followers for monetization purposes. The investigation is ongoing.”

In a separate incident, the police arrested three individuals suspected of phone snatching and robbery in Minna.

“On October 12, 2025, at approximately 3:30 pm, a distress call was received at the GRA Division from Kure Market reporting that some individuals, who frequently use unregistered tricycles to snatch phones from unsuspecting members of the public, were spotted near the market,” the statement said.

“Responding promptly, the police patrol team apprehended three suspects: Hassan Abdullahi, 19, from Abdulsalam Motor-Park area; Abubakar Ali, 25, from Chanchaga; and Kalipha Bashiru, 21, from Bosso,” the statement added.

“Several victims later came forward at the police station, presenting their recovered phones and identifying the suspects as responsible for the recurring phone snatching and related criminal activities in the market vicinity.”

“The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, with plans to prosecute them in court soon.”
