The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has hailed Abuja as one of the safest and most tranquil cities in Nigeria, attributing this status to robust security frameworks and the community’s firm stance against crime.
In his message commemorating Independence Day on Wednesday, Wike took the opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s historical journey, celebrate national unity, and highlight the milestones achieved under his leadership in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’
He underscored the FCT’s importance as a powerful emblem of Nigeria’s unity and national identity.
Wike encouraged residents to maintain their collective spirit, emphasizing that their unity honors the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers and ensures their legacy endures.
The anniversary, he noted, serves as a moment for thoughtful reflection and evaluation, essential for fostering renewed optimism and envisioning a prosperous future.
Expressing appreciation for the community’s backing of the President’s priorities-which focus on economic advancement, enhanced security, food sustainability, infrastructure growth, and sustainable development-the minister affirmed that significant strides have been made in these areas.
“With your steadfast support, the FCT Administration remains committed to delivering top-tier infrastructure and essential public services, as evidenced by the completion and inauguration of key road projects,” Wike stated.

“We have also renovated numerous schools and healthcare facilities, equipping them with modern tools and qualified staff,” he added.
Highlighting economic empowerment initiatives, Wike mentioned ongoing support for farmers and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), aimed at uplifting youth and women while stimulating economic growth.
Looking ahead, the minister addressed the forthcoming Area Council elections scheduled for February 2026, marking the official commencement of the nation’s electoral cycle.
“I urge all residents to engage in peaceful and respectful campaigning, and to cast their votes for candidates who genuinely prioritize the welfare of the people-leaders with clear vision and the ability to drive development and prosperity,” he appealed.
Wike reassured citizens of the Administration’s collaboration with security agencies to maintain law and order throughout the FCT, while calling on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly.
He commended President Tinubu for his deliberate focus on improving citizens’ quality of life and called for sustained collective efforts to fully unlock the FCT’s potential and realize shared goals.
“Despite the challenges confronting our nation, we remain hopeful and confident that a brighter future lies ahead,” he concluded.
