Over 400 golf enthusiasts are gearing up to compete in the Nigeria @ 6Honours 5 Independence Golf Tournament, hosted at the prestigious TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club in Abuja.
This week-long celebration is designed to mark Nigeria’s 65th year of independence while paying tribute to both active and retired members of the Nigerian Army.
Dr. James Agbonhese, who leads the organizing committee, revealed these details during a press briefing at the Club House yesterday. He emphasized that the tournament’s core mission is to foster unity, friendship, and a strong sense of national pride.
“This event transcends sport; it embodies the spirit of our nation-solidarity, resilience, discipline, and the pursuit of excellence,” Agbonhese remarked.
He further highlighted that the tournament will also serve as the platform for unveiling significant infrastructure enhancements at the golf resort. These include the Midway Hut, a project spearheaded by Chief Samuel Ayanmele; a state-of-the-art Golf Practice Range; the Back 9 Starter Shed, constructed under the guidance of Brig.-Gen. D.M. Onoyiveta (rtd); and a newly established Golf Cart Bay.
Expressing appreciation, Agbonhese acknowledged the unwavering support of the tournament’s Grand Patron, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Army Staff, whose dedication has been instrumental to both the club and the event’s success.
Major General Samson Jiya, the club captain, described the tournament as a meaningful homage to the military’s vital role in preserving the nation’s unity. Representing him, Dr. Ali Peters, vice chairman of TYB Golf Club, reflected, “As we honor this milestone, it is essential to remember the vision and sacrifices of our founding leaders that have shaped our journey.”
He underscored that the introduction of these new facilities marks a pivotal advancement for the club. “These developments will significantly elevate the experience for members and visitors alike,” Peters noted. “They stand as a testament to the club’s ongoing growth and its commitment to world-class amenities.”
Shola Adebayo, the tournament manager, assured participants and attendees of an exceptional event.
“Beyond competitive play, the tournament will offer daily matches, opportunities for networking, and cultural exhibitions,” Adebayo shared. “It promises not only high-caliber golf but also a rich, memorable experience for everyone involved.”
The competition is scheduled to commence on Saturday, 27 September, culminating on 1 October with a formal closing tee-off ceremony.
Among the notable guests expected are Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, Director-General of the Department of State Services; General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff; Lieutenant General O.O. Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff; Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye, Chief of Defence Intelligence; alongside other prominent figures, including diplomats, retired senior officers, and civilian dignitaries.
The event will conclude with an awards presentation honoring the tournament champion and recognizing outstanding performers across multiple categories.
