Nigeria and China Forge $1 Million Grant Agreement to Bolster Flood Relief Efforts
The Nigerian Federal Government has formalized a $1 million grant agreement with the People’s Republic of China aimed at enhancing flood relief operations in Northern Nigeria. This pact, sealed through an Exchange of Notes (E/N) in Abuja, underscores the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis caused by recent severe flooding.
Strategic Partnership Strengthens Humanitarian Response
Presiding over the signing, Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning emphasized the grant as a crucial and timely contribution to ongoing relief efforts. He highlighted that this support not only addresses immediate needs but also reinforces the enduring partnership between Nigeria and China, which is founded on mutual respect and a commitment to sustainable development.
To ensure the funds are utilized efficiently and transparently, the Ministry will collaborate closely with relevant government bodies and establish a joint monitoring and evaluation framework alongside the Chinese Embassy. This mechanism aims to guarantee accountability and tangible outcomes in the flood-affected regions.
Enhancing Recovery and Long-Term Development
The Minister further explained that the grant will supplement Nigeria’s existing disaster response programs, facilitating the restoration of livelihoods in the most devastated communities. Beyond humanitarian aid, this initiative is expected to deepen Sino-Nigerian cooperation across multiple sectors, including infrastructure development, trade expansion, agricultural innovation, and technological advancement.
China’s Continued Commitment Amid Shared Challenges
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, You Dunhai, reaffirmed China’s unwavering support for Nigeria during this crisis, noting the solidarity between the two nations, especially as China itself contends with flood-related difficulties. Marking his first anniversary in Nigeria, Ambassador You reflected on the significant progress in bilateral relations, particularly following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to China in September 2024.
He highlighted the growth in trade, investment, cultural exchanges, and multilateral cooperation, underscoring China’s dedication to strengthening this partnership. Ambassador You also referenced President Xi Jinping’s June 2025 declaration granting zero-tariff access to all African exports, including those from Nigeria, as a strategic move to stimulate economic development and job creation across the continent.
Looking Ahead: A Model for International Cooperation
Expressing condolences for the recent flood victims, Ambassador You emphasized that the China-Nigeria relationship is built on principles of equality, mutual benefit, and shared aspirations for progress. This grant agreement exemplifies how international collaboration can effectively address humanitarian emergencies while fostering sustainable growth.
As Nigeria continues to recover from the devastating floods, this partnership with China offers renewed hope and resources to rebuild resilient communities and strengthen economic ties for the future.
