Nigeria@65: NOA Calls for Deep Reflection on National Values and Citizen Responsibility

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to move beyond mere ceremonial celebrations and to actively recommit themselves to the core principles of patriotism, national unity, and responsible citizenship.

In a press release issued on Wednesday in Abuja, marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, NOA’s Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, highlighted the importance of using this milestone as a moment for profound introspection about the essence of Nigerian identity.

He encouraged citizens to harness the strength found in Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity and collective dreams for harmony, progress, and national cohesion.

“Nigeria’s future hinges not only on the leadership but equally on how each individual upholds values like discipline, honesty, self-sufficiency, and fairness in everyday life,” Issa-Onilu remarked.

Recognizing the ongoing initiatives by President Bola Tinubu’s government to rejuvenate the economy, the NOA chief called on Nigerians to view this year’s Independence celebration as a catalyst for proactive civic involvement, volunteerism, and community empowerment.

He emphasized that true patriotism transcends symbolic acts; it is reflected in daily behaviors such as honoring national emblems, abiding by laws, and fostering unity amidst diversity.

Issa-Onilu also appealed to educational institutions, religious organizations, traditional leaders, and civil society to leverage Independence Day as an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations about national identity, cultural heritage, and the citizen’s role in fortifying democracy.

“Nation-building starts at the grassroots. It is vital to empower individuals to recognize their crucial role in Nigeria’s advancement,” he added.

Reiterating NOA’s dedication to its mission, Issa-Onilu assured that the Agency will persist in its efforts to promote civic virtues, raise awareness about government initiatives, and enhance national unity across the country.

He concluded by encouraging Nigerians both within the country and abroad to use this anniversary to renew their allegiance to the nation and collaborate towards creating a peaceful, united, and thriving Nigeria.

“As we celebrate 65 years of independence, let us recommit ourselves to building the Nigeria we envision-a nation grounded in strong values, propelled by its people, and destined for greatness,” he affirmed.
