Lagos witnessed a landmark cinematic event last evening with the exclusive premiere of My Father’s Shadow, ahead of its official nationwide launch scheduled for September 19, 2025, under the banner of FilmOne Distributions.
The premiere took place at the prestigious Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX, attracting a diverse crowd of filmmakers, actors, cultural icons, industry leaders, exhibitors, and media personnel. This gathering celebrated the film’s triumphant return to Nigerian soil after garnering international acclaim. Notably, My Father’s Shadow made history as the first Nigerian feature to be included in the Cannes Film Festival’s Official Selection (Un Certain Regard) earlier this year, earning a special mention with the Caméra d’Or for best debut film.
Set against the backdrop of June 23, 1993 – a pivotal day when Nigeria’s democratic aspirations were crushed following the annulment of the June 12 election – the narrative chronicles the journey of two brothers navigating Lagos alongside their distant father. Initially conceived as a short film script by producer Wale Davies, the story evolved into a full-length feature through collaboration with his brother, the esteemed director Akinola Davies Jr. The film offers a poignant exploration of themes such as fatherhood, self-identity, and collective national memory.
During the premiere, director Akinola Davies Jr shared, “My hope is that viewers will connect with the elements I cherish most in this film – the intricate family dynamics, the political undertones, spiritual reflections, and psychological depth. Portraying these layers within a mid-1990s Nigerian setting gives the film its distinctive voice. We aimed to craft a story that resonates universally, allowing audiences to see their own experiences mirrored on screen.”
Funmbi Ogunbanwo, producer and CEO of Fatherland, remarked, “I’m thrilled for audiences to witness Lagos depicted in such a vivid and authentic manner. The film captures the vibrant mosaic of Nigeria – its people, languages, and culture. Viewers will feel the pulse and energy of Lagos, a city of immense scale. The brothers’ journey with their father through this sprawling metropolis culminates in a rich portrayal of family bonds.”
Ladun Awobokun, Chief Content Officer at FilmOne Entertainment, emphasized, “Our mission at FilmOne is to champion stories that are both artistically compelling and culturally significant. My Father’s Shadow is a genuine narrative that echoes shared experiences, and by distributing it across West Africa, we ensure that local audiences engage with a story that has already captivated global viewers.”
Kene Okwuosa, Group CEO of Filmhouse Group, added, “The international accolades for My Father’s Shadow are extraordinary, and it’s vital that audiences in Nigeria, Ghana, and Liberia partake in this historic moment. Our commitment to releasing the film across these regions reflects our dedication to elevating African storytelling both globally and within our own communities.”
The premiere also spotlighted the film’s outstanding cast, featuring Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù in the role of Folarin. Additionally, it introduced fresh talent Chibuike Marvellous Egbo and Godwin Egbo, discovered through an innovative street casting initiative in Lagos. Filmed entirely on Nigerian soil, the production employed a predominantly Nigerian cast and crew – over 80% – thereby contributing significantly to the local creative industry.
Following its Lagos debut, My Father’s Shadow is set for a nationwide release on September 19, 2025, marking the start of its international theatrical rollout. With its critical praise, compelling narrative, and cultural importance, the film promises to inspire audiences, empower Nigerian creatives, and attract further investment into the country’s burgeoning film sector.
The premiere was proudly sponsored by The Glenlivet Single Malt Whisky and Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, adding a touch of elegance to the celebration.
