On Saturday evening in Southport, North Carolina, a tragic shooting unfolded when a gunman approached a waterfront bar by boat and opened fire, resulting in three fatalities and five injuries. The assailant targeted an open-air dockside bar, creating chaos and fear among patrons.
Authorities apprehended Nigel Edge later that night, charging him with first-degree murder in connection with what officials have described as a deliberate and planned assault.
Following the incident, the suspect attempted to escape by navigating his boat toward the Intracoastal Waterway. Approximately 30 minutes after the shooting, at around 10 p.m., the Coast Guard spotted an individual matching the suspect’s description loading a boat at a public ramp, according to Southport Police Chief Todd Coring.
The violent event took place at the American Fish Company, a popular venue known for live music and waterfront views. Police are urging anyone who witnessed the shooting or has relevant information to come forward to assist with the investigation.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and those affected by this heartbreaking event,” Chief Coring expressed during a Sunday morning press briefing.
Local District Attorney Jon David noted that many victims appeared to be visitors rather than residents, emphasizing the widespread impact of the tragedy. He revealed that one of the injured remains in critical condition, fighting for their life.
David recounted arriving at the scene late Saturday night and witnessing firsthand the devastating aftermath. “The horror of what transpired was evident,” he said.
Officials have stated that the suspect acted alone and that there is no ongoing threat to public safety. While Edge was known to law enforcement, David remarked there was no prior indication suggesting he was capable of such violence. Public records indicate Edge is 41 years old.
Further investigation revealed that Nigel Edge had previously changed his name from Sean Debevoise, as confirmed by Southport’s public information officer ChyAnn Ketchum, citing details from the district attorney’s office.
This incident adds to the alarming number of mass shootings in the United States, with the Gun Violence Archive reporting at least 324 such events this year alone-defined as shootings where four or more individuals are injured or killed.
Law enforcement described the weapon used in the attack as an assault rifle.
In response, the American Fish Company released a statement expressing deep sorrow: “Our hearts are shattered, and we extend our prayers to the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this tragedy.” The establishment announced it will remain closed indefinitely.
Nigel Edge is currently held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
